Myalgische encefalomyelitis

Ziekte
Myalgische encefalomyelitis (ME) is een postvirale hersenziekte. De naam geeft aan dat het gaat om ontstekingen in hersenen en ruggenmerg, die gepaard gaan aan spierpijn. Geschat wordt dat er in Nederland minstens 14.000 ME-patiënten zijn. De ziekte is in veel gevallen chronisch en kan een grillig verloop hebben.

De ziekte heeft gevolgen voor het functioneren van de hersenen alsook voor diverse andere lichamelijke systemen, zoals het immuunsysteem en het cardiovasculair systeem (hart en bloedcirculatie), de energievoorziening en de hormoonproductie. ME wordt daarom beschouwd als een neuro-immunologische of een neuro-endocrino-immunologische aandoening.

Klachten
Belangrijke klachten bij ME zijn: lichamelijke en geestelijke uitputting, slechte nachtrust, spierzwakte en spierpijn, maag- en darmklachten, moeite met aandacht en concentratie, keel-, neus- en oorklachten, hoofdpijn, gewrichtspijn, duizeligheid en moeite met zien. De meeste patiënten hebben tevens last van een of meer bijkomende aandoeningen zoals fibromyalgie, prikkelbaredarmsyndroom, candidiasis, hypoglykemie of B12-tekort (Stichting ME Research, februari 2014).

Prevalentie
Er zijn in Nederland minstens 14.000 mensen met ME, waaronder ook kinderen.De ziekte is in veel gevallen chronisch en komt onder alle bevolkingsgroepen voor.

Patiëntenorganisatie
De ME Vereniging Nederland is de Nederlandse patiëntenvereniging voor myalgische encefalomyelitis.
